Essential Oil Diffusers and Diffuser Blends for Beginners

By Tom Woloshyn, The Lemonade Guy

There are many ways to use essential oils in your day to day living; they can be applied topically, taken internally or diffused into the air.  To use essential oils in any way, it is extremely important that they be of the highest quality possible.  Many people have very little knowledge of essential oils, where they come from, how they are distilled, or how they are tested to verify their quality.

I only use Young Living essential oils as I have been to, and worked on, a few of the farms where they grow and distill their essential oils.  I have seen first hand what is required to ensure that you are getting only the highest quality product.

In this article, I will focus on the diffusion of essential oils into the air by placing essential oils into a water bath and then dispersing a super fine mist of water and essential oils that float in the air. This is done by using a diffuser, and there are many different sizes and varieties, but they all basically do the same job.  These are not to be confused with an atomizer which also creates a super fine mist of only essential oil(s) that are blown into the air(without water).

The advantage of using a diffuser is that a few drops (8 to15) of essential oils, depending on the diffuser, can diffuse a mist of water and essential oils for several hours.  This is a much more economical use of your precious essential oils and will allow for a greater appreciation of their properties.  I highly recommend you invest in the highest quality oils to use in your diffuser, as you will soon tire of the smell of low quality essential oils.

My all time favorite diffuser blend to use while I am on The Master Cleanse is 4 drops frankincense, 5 drops black spruce, and 2 drops lemon.  Not only do I love the aroma of this combination of oils, it helps me feel grounded and more spiritually connected while I am on the cleanse.

When you breathe in these oils, they do affect your mood and behavior because they are organic compounds and some of the constituents pass through the blood/brain barrier.  They have positive effects on our well-being, both mental and emotional.

For example, students who studied for exams while smelling peppermint had greater retention of information when taking the exam than students who had not used peppermint while studying.

Peppermint gives a natural lift similar to using coffee without the addiction and nervousness.  A favorite blend of mine to use in the morning is Peppermint with Citrus Fresh or Lemon Essential Oil.  I like to use equal parts Peppermint and Citrus Fresh or Lemon, approximately 5 drops of each.

Lavender is another great oil I like to diffuse because it is a balancing and very calming oil. Many people use it as their go to oil, it was actually one of Gary Young’s favorite oil’s.  While on a flight from Europe, a passenger directly behind me was having a panic attack as we were landing in New York.

There were four flight attendants trying to help her to no avail, so I pulled out my bottle of lavender.  I told her to put it under her nose and breathe in deeply, and within 20 seconds she completely calmed down and asked, “what is this?”  Yes, it was that simple and easy, and as you become more familiar with essential oils and their properties, you will want a variety of these oils to create a mood or ambience for any situation.  Airlines would do well to diffuse oils into the cabin to calm people and make it easy for them to sleep and also purify the air all at the same time.

My favorite diffuser blend with lavender is 3 drops lavender, 3 drops frankincense, and 3 drops Idaho Grand Fir.

In future articles, I will discuss specific oils and their use for different problems such as pain, depression, PMS, insomnia, and other conditions.  Feel free to write to me to suggest an oil to write about or a condition that might be helped with essential oils.  DM on IG: @tomwoloshyn, DM on FB: The Complete Master Cleanse with Tom Woloshyn | Facebook, or email [email protected]
